Patient builds bird house to thank hospital staff

A patient has shown his appreciation for healthcare professionals in Warrington by building a bird house for hospital grounds.

Dave Simpson, 74, was recently treated at Spire Cheshire hospital at Stretton and felt he wanted to do something to thank the staff and put a smile on other patients’ faces.
The avid bird-watcher said he has a ‘special place in his heart’ for the NHS, and claims he wouldn’t know where he’d be without it, after surviving a heart attack in 2011 and being treated for bladder cancer in 2015.
For the past 12 months Spire Cheshire has been helping the NHS to deal with the pandemic.

Previously self-employed in the building trade, Dave retired 10 years ago due to health complications, so began to make things like go-carts and bird houses as a way to fill his time.
Dave Simpson, who’s also made gifts for relatives that have lost loved ones, said; “It was a really low point for me when I wasn’t able to go back to work – both financially and mentally. But just like during lockdown, you make adjustments and find a way to keep busy.
“Recently I was at Spire Cheshire for a procedure and I looked out the window and saw the garden. I thought a bird house would be a nice addition and would be a great way to thank the nurses and doctors for everything they do.
“I can’t thank both the NHS and the team at Spire Cheshire enough for all their care and support. I hope the bird house attracts some wildlife into the garden and brightens the days of both patients and staff. And of course makes a lovely home for local wildlife!”
Cheryl Ward, Interim Hospital Director, said “We were really touched to receive the bird house from Mr Simpson. Looking after our patients and providing excellent care has always been our priority, so when a patient takes the time to do something kind for us in return it means a lot. Hopefully we’ll get some birds building a nest and joining the team here at Spire Cheshire.”

  1. I had my hip replacement there 6 weeks ago followed by physio at the General . After 6 plus years of agony in both my legs I’m doing fine in my left me hip. My right is still killing me and now the weakest.
The nature themed donation from this man is great and I’m about to finish off a humming.bird watercolour as soon as my great art teacher Sue Cartwright can give me some what’s app tips

Now who shall I donate it too?

Thanks to Spire and the NHS for at least turning my life around and sorry to the nurse who caught me wandering around the corridor on my new crutches.
