New £160,000 community park is formally opened

A £160,000 refurbishment project has given a new lease of life to a field Great Sankey, Warrington – creating a new community park.

Warrington Borough Council and Great Sankey Parish Council worked together to develop the field off Parsonage Way adjoining the main A57 into a landscaped community parkland. Work involved improving the drainage, replacing the boundary fence, providing an arched entrance and installing a new pathway and new seating.
Vicarage Community Park was formally opened by Cllr Tony Higgins, the borough council’s cabinet member for Leisure and Community, joined by Cllr Peter Watson and Cllr Tony Williams, of Great Sankey Parish Council and members of the local community.
Cllr Higgins said: “These improvements have transformed the area into an accessible public open space for the whole community.
“I’m delighted this work is complete. It’s great news for the local people, who can look forward to many years of recreation and relaxation in this fantastic new area.”
The new arched entrance to the park was manufactured by local steel fabricator Cromwall Fabrications. The design features three salmon which is the heraldic arms of the Parish of Great Sankey. A history board detailing the full information will be added later.t.
The planting scheme creates a sensory experience for visitors – the sight, smell and touch of the plants have all been carefully thought about to create a peaceful and relaxing experience.
Tarmac was the main contractor for the scheme, the drainage system was installed by Duncan Ross Ltd, the subcontractor was Lambros Paving Contractors Ltd and the fencing was done by Jacksons Fencing.
