Mayor wishes town’s Jewish community a happy and healthy Hanukkah

MAYOR of Warrington Cllr Maureen Creaghan has wished the town’s Jewish community a happy and healthy Hanukkah which begins tomorrow, December 10.

Hanukkah is an eight-day festival celebrated in Judaism. It is the Jewish ‘Festival of Lights’ and commemorates the rededication of the second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.
On each night of the celebration, a candle is lit after sundown and added to a special menorah called a ‘hanukkiah’
The holiday is usually celebrated with the lighting of the menorah, traditional foods, games and gifts. This year, like many other celebrations, Hanukkah will be affected by local coronavirus restrictions. Those celebrating Hanukkah in Warrington will need to continue to adhere to the tier 2 rules.
This means:
·you must not socialise with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble in any indoor setting, whether at home or in a public place
·you must not socialise in a group of more than six people outside, including in a garden or a public space – this is called the ‘rule of six’
·places of worship remain open but you must not socialise with people from outside of your household or support bubble while you are indoors
Cllr Creaghan, said: “Happy Hanukkah to all those celebrating in Warrington!
“We hope you’re able to mark and enjoy Hanukkah in your own way, as local restrictions may mean changing how you would usually celebrate the holiday.
“Please make sure to keep to the tier 2 restrictions while you’re enjoying the festival to ensure you and others are safe and well.”
