Major housing scheme gets the green light

PLANS for up to 617 homes, shops, a hotel and food and drink facilities on Warrington’s Omega South development area have been given the green light.

The borough council’s development management committee approved the scheme put forward by Omega Warrington Ltd.
It was the second time the committee had considered the proposals – and the second time they had approved them.
Back in August councillors approved the scheme, subject to it not being “called in” by the Secretary of State.
Since then the Secretary of State has indicated he did not wish to call-in the project so councillors re-affirmed their earlier decision.
The application represents a departure from the borough’s development plan which originally zoned the land in question for employment purposes. But it is now believed unlikely that any suitable employment scheme will come forward.
In addition to housing, the scheme involves retail and food and drink uses, a hotel, an extra-care facility and a non-residential institution.
Nearby residents have expressed concern about the impact the project may have on local roads, but officers recommended it for approval.
