Hockey men in great 5-1 victory

FOURTEEN-year-old Harvey Mason scored his first goal for Warrington Hockey Club’s men’s 1st team in a 5-1 victory over Wilmslow.
He slotted the ball in after a series of passes and finding the finishing position.
Vice captain Michael Holmes simply dubbed it: “A proper hockey goal”.
Mason Jnr’s goal was followed by a Mason Snr finish from a penalty corner and Simon Mason’s strike made it a family affair on the scoresheet. Return signing Ben Vickers added two more to his tally and chairman Scott Reid found a surprise goal. Wilmslow scored a great consolation goal on the break but couldn’t find a way back in.
The women’s 1st team hosted local rivals Runcorn in a pre-season friendly. Runcorn came strong from the division above, keeping Warrington pressed and going 0-2 up by half time. But Warrington came out of the blocks fast in the second half; equalising with goals from plucky forward Molly Rudd and the speedy new addition Emma Turner. The aerials and goal scored by Carrie Wright weren’t enough to prevent Runcorn edging a 4 3 win, in what was a hugely entertaining and challenging game.
Junior hockey training started back on Saturday, 11am-12 noon at Priestley College. There was a great turn-out and with qualified coaches and the women’s 1st team captain present, the session was a great success. Anyone interested in giving it a go should get in touch – all standards are welcome.
