School attendance officer to run “virtual” marathon

SCHOOL attendance officer Darren Willcock is running the Virgin 40th  Race marathon tomorrow (Sunday) to raise money for the National Autistic Society.
Originally, Mr Willock, from Warrington’s Sir Thomas Boteler CE High School, had planned to run the “proper” London Marathon, but when it was cancelled because of Covid-19 he managed to get a charity spot in the Virgin virtual run.
For the last few miles, he will be running in Boteler’s  school field and 56 students have signed up to run with him  – at a safe distance.
He’s been lucky enough to have been given one of the 100 spots (out of 45,000!) on  the BBC’s video wall, where he will appear live.
This will be filmed by Boteler’s graphic designer, Alice Roberts,  on the day and streamed to the BBC video wall between 12.30pm and 1pm.
Access to the school field is restricted to the staff who are helping, and the 56 runners – and Mr Willcock, of course!
Three years ago, Mr Willcock’s nine-year-old son was diagnosed with autism.
He  has  been busy organising events in school such as bake sales and form challenges, as well as having bucket collections at community events.
