CULCHETH’S Walking Football group has accepted an invitation to play in the Euro Cup next year at Albufeira, Portugal – COVID-19 permitting.

A total of 48 teams are taking part in the two-day competition, from all over Europe.
It’s due to take place on April 25-27 and the Culcheth group already has flights and accommodation booked.
Chairman/manager Denis Sutherland said: “The pandemic stopped the group’s charity day on March 21 in aid of the Christie Hospital.
“This was very disappointing as 16 teams from around the North West were due to compete for the Culcheth Cup trophy, currently held by last year’s winners, Blackburn Rovers Blue.
“We are hoping we can re-organise the tournament for March/ May next year.”
Meanwhile, the players have commenced training as directed by the recent current FA Ruling for grass roots football which allows for a group of up to 30 to begin fitness routines in preparation for competitive games in the future.

Denis said: “The first session was at Shaw Street Playing fields as our usual training facilities at Culcheth High School are still not open. We have undertaken the necessary regulations, temperatures taken beforehand, social distancing, track and trace and two of the group have completed a safeguarding course.
“Also this year we received a grant through the Warrington Elderly Community Fund which allowed us to purchase a new kit, football and training aids. Plus it enabled us to buy sufficient insurance to cover all eventualities for players and staff.
“Once we are back at the High School on Tuesdays at 7pm we would welcome any males or females who want to join our group for exercise, companionship, well being and social get together.”
