FOOD left on a gas hob is believed to have started a fire which caused extensive damage at a house at Glazebury, near Warrington, early today.
Four fire engines went to the scene in Warrington Road at around 4.20am, from Warrington, Birchwood, Penketh and Wigan.
No-one was hurt but the fire caused extensive damage to the semi-detached house and the adjoining property was also heavily smokelogged.
As well as the kitchen, the fire had damaged a bathroom directly above it on the first floor.
The area damaged by the fire on arrival was approximately five metres by 10 metres.
Gas, water and electricity supplies to the property were isolated and four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the blaze using two hose reel jets and other specialist equipment.
Firefighters used large fans to clear smoke from the address and the adjacent property
A gas detector was also used but there were no concerning readings. Lighting was used to aid the work of firefighters at the scene.
When the fire looked to be out the area affected by it was damped down to make it safe. Firefighters also looked for hotspots with a thermal imaging camera.
Tiles were removed from the bathroom to expose floorboards which were cut away to expose the fascia in the bathroom.
Once they were satisfied that the house, and the neighbouring property, were safe firefighters left the scene after an operation lasting about three-and-a-half hours.
The fire is believed to have been caused by food being left cooking on a gas hob.
