New COVID-19 cases decreasing in Warrington

THERE have been just five new COVID-19 cases confirmed in Warrington in the past week – compared to 36 the previous week when health chiefs warned local residents against complacency.

And with no new deaths reported at Warrington & Halton Hospitals Trust, there is currently, as of noon today, just one COVID-19 positive in patient remaining at the hospital in the intensive Care Unit.

A total of 1,395 people in Warrington have now tested positive for COVID-19.

Cabinet member for Public Health, Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, said: “I’d like to sincerely thank everybody for playing their part and helping to control and reduce the number of cases in Warrington.
“It’s so important not to be complacent, no matter how reassuring these latest figures are. We have seen and experienced how quickly this picture can change – we only have to look at some areas of Greater Manchester to see how prevalent the virus’ spread can be. We are still living with the virus and we know how easy it is to transmit, so now that we have all helped to drive case numbers back down again, we must remain determined to keep it this way.”
Director of Public Health at the council, Thara Raj, said: “Warrington is a fabulous place to live, work and socialise but we are seeing the numbers go up and down. We need to keep our eye on the case figures, but more importantly we must remember to keep our distance from others, wear a face covering where necessary and maintain excellent hand hygiene.
“The numbers of people getting tested in Warrington has also increased, which again is a very encouraging sign. Getting tested is an important part of helping to prevent further outbreaks of the virus. I would therefore urge anyone who symptoms of coronavirus – however mild – including a new, persistent cough, high temperature or loss of normal taste or smell, to book a test and self-isolate immediately.”

· warrington-worldwide figures were based on the latest seven day figures.(Aug 13-20). Public Health England (PHE) advise that case numbers in the most recent four-day period (ie 17-20 August) may be subject to change, depending on how quickly lab results can be verified and returned. Case numbers for the most recent seven-day period up to and including 20 August, for example, are therefore unconfirmed and may not currently be accurate.
