WARRINGTON North MP Charlotte Nichols has welcomed proposals set out by the Law Commission to tackle the “leasehold scandal” which has left many people trapped in onerous agreements.

The Law Commission has published a series of proposals aimed at transforming the leasehold system.
Commenting on the proposals, Ms Nichols, said:“Like many of my constituents who are currently trapped in onerous leasehold agreements, I welcome the proposals that have been set out by the Law Commission to tackle the leasehold scandal.
“Many leaseholders in Warrington North are reporting a whole range of problems, including high service charges and a lack of transparency over what they are being charged for; excessive costs associated with administrative charges and applications to extend agreements; rip-off ground rents and impossibly high costs to buy their freeholds.
“It has been clear for some time that the leasehold system is deeply unfair – leaving many feeling like they don’t own their own homes.
“The Law Commission has set out proposals to tackle these issues – giving leaseholders greater control over their own homes and making it easier and cheaper to get out of unfair leasehold agreements.
“We now need to see Government action on this issue. Despite previous promises to act to help leaseholders – the Government has been too slow, too weak and existing leaseholders have largely been overlooked.

“In response to the Law Commission’s proposals, the Government must now come forward with the legislation that is needed to put these plans into action. Previously kicked into the long grass by successive Tory governments, there is now a need to act with speed to provide redress for the many people who have campaigned so hard to tackle this unfairness.
“On behalf of Warrington North residents, I will be doing all that I can to press the Government to act fast on this issue and, I will continue to fight for an end to the injustice of the current leasehold system.”
