ONE more patient has sadly died at Warrington Hospital after testing posting for COVID-19, while there have been 17 new cases confirmed in the town, on a “sad day for nation” as the UK death toll surpassed 20,000.
A total of 65 people have now died at the hospital after testing positive, with the total number of confirmed cases in Warrington reaching 533.
As of noon Friday 1,677 patients had been tested in hospital or in the community and 161 patients had been discharged. The majority of those testing positive do not require hospital treatment
Across the country the daily number of COVID-19 associated UK deaths in hospital was 813 while the total number of COVID-19 associated UK deaths in hospital is 20,319.
No figures include deaths in cae homes or elsewhere, which will be in the thousands.
A total of 148,377 have now tested positive across the country with the daily number of new lab-confirmed UK cases totalling 4,913.
Meanwhile at the Goverments daily briefing Professor Stephen Powis, National Medical Director of NHS England, said it was a “very sad day for the nation” after the total number of hospital deaths surpassed 20,000.
Back on March 17 the government’s chief scientific adviser Sir Patrick Vallance, said keeping the UK deaths below 20,000 would be a “good result.”
Prof Powis added: “20,000 deaths is clearly 20,000 deaths too many.
“The first thing to emphasise is this unfortunately is not going to be something we get over in the next few weeks. This is something we are going to have to work our way through over the months ahead.
“It is not a sprint, it is a marathon. Moving past 20,000 deaths just reminds everybody, that it is still absolutely critical that we continue to follow social distancing guidelines.
“We are seeing the benefits and we will only continue to see reductions in deaths, if we continue to do that.”
