WARRINGTON’S Debenhams store in Golden Square, Warrington, is one of seven that will not re-open after the Coronavirus lockdown.
The troubled retailer which has already filed for administration twice this year, says it is in talks to to save most of its estate – but Warrington has been named as one the first seven stores that will not re-open after the Government’s coronavirus measures are relaxed.
Britain’s oldest department store, says it has agreed terms to save around 120 of its 142 branches but the seven stores will shut, affecting 422 staff.
The other affected are in Leamington Spa, Truro, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Salisbury, Westfield in west London and South Shields.
Staff at the Warrington store were told via conference call earlier today.
Debenhams chief executive Stefaan Vansteenkiste said: “I’m delighted with the progress we are making with our landlord discussions which reflects the pragmatic view the vast majority of them are taking of the current market conditions.”
“We have agreed terms on the vast majority of our UK stores and talks are proceeding positively on the remainder, positioning us to reopen these stores when government regulations permit.
“Regrettably we have been unable to reach agreement on seven stores and these will not be reopening, and I’d like to express my thanks to our colleagues in these stores at what I know is a difficult time for everyone”
All stores are currently closed following the lockdown.
Ian Cox, Centre Director at Golden Square Shopping Centre, said he understands that Debenhams have made the decision as a business to not reopen their store.
He said: “This news is hugely disappointing for Warrington, and especially for the dedicated team who have served our shoppers for many years. We are working with our retailers to support any business decisions and how these may or may not impact their stores within Golden Square.”
