How will Brexit affect HR?

Britain has left the EU and although we need to wait for the transition process to be completed, the uncertainty on UK businesses continues as they look for a plan to move forward.

The transition period will last until the end of 2020 with the new rules coming into place from 1st January 2021.

Here are just a few of the many ways that Brexit may affect HR…

Relocating or even getting rid of current staff

No one wants to see anyone lose their job, but with the UK exiting the European Union this will undoubtedly have an impact on some people living and working in the UK.
EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can apply to the EU settlement scheme to continue living in the UK. Unfortunately some applications may be rejected which will result in the company losing the talent from the business.

Recruiting talent from across Europe?

It goes without saying that the applicants applying for jobs in the UK from Europe will reduce and in fact there has already been a drop in talent supply since the announcement of Brexit.

Increased competition for British applicants

In extremely skilled jobs where there may only be a small list of potential suitors, as EU applications have reduced, the power is now in the candidate’s hands to demand a price they want, rather than a price that the job/company is willing to pay.
It could all turn out to be an extremely expensive process.

Worker’s Rights

A lot of current legislation was derived from EU law and it’s anyone’s guess at present as to whether they will remain as they are or be relaxed somewhat.
Certain legislation was implemented without EU input and so these will certainly remain, such as Pension auto-enrolment and shared parental leave, however it may be the more criticised legislation that is tweaked. Either way, we will watch, wait, and keep you updated as soon as changes are announced.

This is just a small snapshot of some of the changes likely to be impacted by Brexit.
