MEMBERS of the Warrington 4 Brexit group are calling on the town’s two MPs to respect the referendum result and vote against any calls for a second referendum.
Members of the cross-party grassroots campaign group, Warrington 4 Brexit, are furious that Remain MPs may force an extension to the UK’s exit date from the EU (currently set at 31st October) in order to use that extension to impose a 2nd referendum, whilst blocking a General Election.
The Warrington 4 Brexit Group was responding to rumours that Remain MPs and the Speaker will try to pass a bill for a 2nd Referendum quickly as they fear a General Election would remove the current Remain majority from Parliament.
A Warrington4Brexit spokesperson commented: “A 2nd referendum with a ‘Remain’ option on the ballot paper would be outright contempt for democracy. There is no mandate for a 2nd referendum and we will not accept seeing the 2016 referendum result discarded.”
The spokesperson continued: “Both our Labour MPs – Helen Jones in Warrington North and Faisal Rashid in Warrington South – were elected at the 2017 General Election on a manifesto pledge to honour the 2016 Referendum result.
Prior to that election Jeremy Corbyn said: ‘We respect the Referendum, we voted for the Referendum, the result we got was the result we got…therefore there’s going to be a departure from the European Union’.
The spokesperson added: “Ms Jones and Mr Rashid must remember that they were elected on that pledge and we call on them to vote down any motion for a 2nd referendum, which – in the absence of a General Election – would wholly lack any kind of democratic legitimacy.”
