Fixed-price funeral plan announced by borough council

A FIXED-price funeral plan to help ease the financial burden on people following bereavement has been announced by Warrington Borough Council.
The Warrington Community Funeral Plan offers residents a dignified and reasonable-cost alternative to what is offered in the marketplace, through a fixed-cost funeral priced at lower than the national average.
Costing £2,399 for cremation and £2418.20 for burial in an existing or public grave – the plan is aimed at stopping people from falling into debt to pay for their loved one’s funeral expenses. This has become an issue for many people in recent years, as funeral costs have increased.
While being more affordable, the funeral plan – which is available to residents of Warrington and beyond – will include all of the key services expected in a funeral.  It includes the funeral service itself, cremation at Walton Lea Crematorium or burial at one of the borough’s cemeteries. The package also includes a hearse and one following car.
The council’s cabinet member for environment and public protection, Cllr Judith Guthrie (pictured), said: “It’s important that we look after our bereavement services, so that we can provide a service which fully meets people’s needs.
“A bereavement is one of the most difficult things anyone can face, and this shouldn’t be compounded by worries over funeral costs. We hope this new service will prove to be a real help, by reducing the financial burden on families who have lost a loved one.”
The new Community Funeral Plan comes following the appointment of Houghton and Son as the council’s new funeral directors. They have been awarded an initial two-year contract, following a competitive tender.
