AN army bomb disposal unit and police were called to Risley Moss today (Thursday) following the discovery of Second World War mortar shells at the site of a former munitions factory.

Members of the The Royal Logistics Corps’ bomb disposal team attended the scene, where mortar shells and tubes had been found in the ground.

Police also attended at the scene as the items were safely disposed of by the bomb unit

Risley Moss was the site of a large munitions factory during the Second World War.

A Warrington Borough Council spokesperson said: “On Wednesday 6 March, whilst undertaking works at Risley Moss, suspected unexploded ordnance was discovered. Due to the site’s history, the Police and Army were contacted – as is standard practice – and cordoned off the area to deal with any potential risk to public safety. This process is now complete and the park has been fully re-opened to the public.”
