Public warned after spate of burglaries

POLICE in Warrington are advising residents to be vigilant following an increase in burglaries.
Over the past few month officers have noticed burglars breaking into properties by snapping the locks and are urging the local community to review their home security while police enquiries are ongoing.
The local community has been advised to help deter thieves by taking extra security precautions such as fitting house alarms, putting alarms on doors and windows or using anti-snap locks.
Detective Constable Ian Morris said: “I would like to take this opportunity to urge residents to consider reviewing their home security while our enquiries continue to find those responsible.
“As we believe burglars are using a lock snapping technique to force entry into houses there are a number of ways residents can help protect their homes.
“For example, are you making sure your windows and doors are locked and secure, even if you are at home, to make it difficult for opportunists? Do you have a house alarm, or alarms on your doors and windows or would you consider getting an anti-snap lock?
“I would also advise people not to leave valuables near windows where they can be seen from the outside. It is an added incentive for a burglar if they know there is something good on offer before they break-in.
“Security lights on the outside of a house are a good investment as they will remove some of the disadvantage of the darker evenings.
“More often than not, traditional burglars target houses while the occupier is out. It is worth spending a few pounds on time switches to turn some inside lights on as daylight fades. If the house looks occupied the burglar will hopefully turn away.
“Think about investing in a security alarm system and if you have one fitted be sure to set it every time you go out and when you go to bed.”
Local officers will be in the area to provide reassurance to the community.
DC Morris added: “Some of the best crime prevention devices are your eyes. Burglars will usually spend time looking round a street to decide which houses are vulnerable.
“If you see anyone acting suspiciously, call police on 101 and report it. You may be doing your neighbours  or yourself -a big favour.”
