Dramatic river rescue from capsized yacht

FIRE and rescue crews from Warrington were this afternoon involved in a dramatic river rescue.
Crews from Warrington, Penketh and Lymm joined others from Widnes and Runcorn to rescue three people from a 27ft sailing yacht which had capsized in the Mersey, under the Mersey Gateway bridge.
A swift water rescue boat from Warrington was also involved in the operation.
Crews were scrambled shortlhyater 12.45pm following a report of a yacht becoming stuck under the bridge.
On arrival they found three people were trapped after the boat had capsized.
St Mary’s Road in Widnes was closed and a small cordon was put in place as emergency services formulated a plan to rescue the people.
The swift water rescue boat was launched from St Mary’s Road and the three people were rescued. They were taken back to shore, where they were checked over by paramedics.
A rope rescue unit and an aerial platform from Lymm were also sent to the scene. In total, five appliances were involved in the operation.
