STUDENTS and staff at the Warrington Campus of the University of Chester are to take part in a Hub of Hope-athon to further develop the UK’s most comprehensive mental health support database.
Launched by the charity Chasing the Stigma in July last year, the Hub of Hope is a cloud based web app that uses location-based technology to help users instantly discover what mental health support is available in their area, as well as providing direct access to The Samaritans through its ‘talk now’ button.
Staff and students at the Warrington Campus will come together on Tuesday, August 28 to work with Chasing the Stigma founder and CEO, Jake Mills, to update the existing database of 1,200 services and clear a backlog of hundreds of new services and organisations wishing to be added to the database.
Since its launch, the Hub of Hope has been accessed by 16,531 unique users, signposting them to the nearest and most relevant mental health support service from its extensive database of national and grassroots organisations.
The Hub of Hope-athon will see volunteers from the Warrington Campus hitting the phones to update details, with each one cleared being added to the web app. The charity event will take place in the Tucker Building at the University and be supported with a visit from Warrington Wolves players, who train at the Campus, as well as free pizza and cake to keep them going!
The Hub of Hope is fast becoming the UK’s go-to signposting app and is currently used by phone advisors on PAPYRUS’ HOPEline UK, emergency services across the country and as part of the Zero Suicide Alliance’s acclaimed ‘See Say Signpost’ training.
The event has been set up by Dean McShane and Lyndsey Hill, who are both Mental Health Lecturers at the University. The duo have previously invited Jake Mills to speak to students on the Mental Health Nursing degree programme about his personal experience with mental health issues and his work with Chasing the Stigma.Dean said: “I am thrilled to be helping such an amazing charity and so proud that so many students are willing to help such a great cause. This is just the start of our work with Chasing the Stigma and a partnership that we believe will enhance the fantastic work we do here in terms of mental health awareness.”
