Woolston Recycling Centre revamp begins

WARRINGTON council is reminding residents that Woolston Community Recycling Centre is about to close for major improvement works.

The recycling centre will be temporarily closed to the public from Monday 6 August. It paves the way for a 12-week refurbishment project, which will provide higher quality recycling services for local people, as well as enabling Warrington to meet current environmental permitting standards.

The Woolston improvements will see the site extended to provide greater capacity for receiving waste and to create a better flow of traffic. It will also benefit from resurfacing, renewed perimeter fencing, and upgraded lighting and security systems.

The Council’s executive board member for environment, Cllr Judith Guthrie, said: “These improvements are an important part of our work to modernise community recycling in Warrington and provide a more efficient, value-for-money service.

“We would ask people to bear with us while this important work is carried out. We believe that the short term disruption will be worth it when the newly refurbished Woolston Recycling Centre re-opens later this year.”

Programmed to complete in late October 2018, the Woolston project is part of a £1.8m investment in community recycling services, which will also see major improvements made at Gatewarth Recycling Centre, to bring it up to the required standards.

The improvements at Gatewarth – which will take place between early October 2018 and February 2019 – will see the site re-modelled to maximise space, including new access and exit points. The works will be phased to ensure the site is operational at all times.

The changes to Gatewarth will enable it to receive small amounts of commercial waste, which could bring in additional income for the council.

  1. Hope the new site will be open longer than 4pm in the week as its a ridiculous early closing for those who have to work during the day. It should be 6pm every day.
