Swimming baths evacuated following spillage of liquid chlorine

A Warrington swimming baths had to be evacuated as firefighters tackled the spillage of liquid chlorine.

Firefighters were called to deal with the incident at Swim on Chetham Court, Warrington, shortly after 2pm yesterday afternoon.

Two fire engines – one from Birchwood and one from Lymm, attended at the Swim building, where crews discovered that the spillage involved a small amount of liquid chlorine.

The building was evacuated as a precaution.

The spillage was confined to the Swim building, though the adjacent building was also evacuated as a precaution.

Two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and specialist gas-tight suits carried out investigations.

Two other firefighters wearing breathing apparatus and specialist gas-tight suits cleared up the spillage using a chemical spill kit.

They contained the spillage within a protective bag.

Crews also ventilated the building.

Firefighters were in attendance for around four hours.

Liquid chlorine is used as a cleaning agent in pools.
