Mersey banks scheme given the go-ahead

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington have given the go-ahead for a scheme to strengthen the crumbling banks of the Mersey at Bridge Foot.
The scheme will involve the temporary dismantling of the Cenotaph – a Grade 2 Listed building – which will be removed and stored in a safe place while the work is carried out.
Cllr Tony McCarthy, chairman of Warrington’s development management committee, said although some people had thought it would be a good idea to move the Cenotaph to another location, the War Memorial Trust believed that where possible, a memorial should remain in its position.
However, the council would take advantage of the scheme to improve access to the Cenotaph and its immediate surrounds.
The committee was told a partial collapse of the river bank near the Cenotaph had affected the stability of the ground on which the memorial stood.
It is proposed to use vibratory hammers to carry out sheet piling work on the river bank to minimise potential damage to fish stocks in the river and to restrict vegetation clearance on the banks during the bird breeding season.
