LABOUR lost out to an Independent in a closely-fought by-election at Penketh.
The contest was for three vacant seats on Penketh Parish Council following the resignation of three councillors.
In West Ward, where two seats were up for grabs, Labour’s Ray McKay came top of the poll.
But Independent Geoff Fellows grabbed the second seat in a contest in which three Independents all polled more than the second Labour candidate or the Conservative.

Geoff Fellows (Independent) 370 (elected)
Joe Dodd (Independent) 362
Craig Lenihan (Independent) 360
Kenny Watson (Lab) 356
Lawrence Worswick (Cons) 292
In East Ward, the Independent challenge failed, with Labour holding the seat comfortably from the Conservatives.
The full result was:
Dale Solan (Lab) 340 (elected)
Phil Hayward (Cons) 170
Michael Potts (Independent) 145
John Fowles (Independent) 76
