CREATIVITY is about to be celebrated in all forms in Warrington as a special festival which will come alive with colour, fun and activities comes to town.
‘Get Creative’ is a BBC-coordinated campaign to celebrate and support the everyday creativity happening in homes and public spaces. Warrington will be taking an active part in this year’s festival, which runs from March 17-25.
The Council and local partners have created an extensive calendar of community events, including arts and crafts sessions, dance, music workshops, photography, reading events and much more.
A special launch event gets the festival underway on March 17. Golden Square Shopping Centre, within the Old Market Square, will play host to a community choir and dance groups, while the Museum will offer up mosaic-making. Warrington library welcomes leading British poet, Clare Shaw, for a special poetry writing workshop; and there will even be a ‘Big Lego Build’ at Warrington Market.
It paves the way to a nine-day feast of creativity in Warrington, with over 100 events taking place across the borough. And many of them are free.
Warrington Borough Council’s executive board member for culture and partnerships, Cllr Dan Price,(pictured) said: “The Get Creative Festival gives us the perfect opportunity to showcase all the wonderful creativity that exists here in Warrington. It’s going to be an action-packed nine days, giving everyone the chance to try their hand at something new and creative, at venues across the borough.
“It’s fantastic to see so many arts, culture and community groups working together to deliver such a varied and exciting programme of events for people to enjoy. It’s a great example of how, working collaboratively, we can deliver a bright cultural future for Warrington.”
Warrington’s community libraries will also play a major part in launch weekend, with a range of fun, family events. They will continue to support the festival throughout the nine days, hosting events from crafternoons and singalongs, to rhyme times and story sessions.
Other organisations taking part in the festival include:
- Life Time – an independent organisation which works with residents over 50 – who will host social crochet and ceramics events at The Gateway. Their community choir will also kick-off the launch events at Old Market Square.
- Warrington Disability Partnership – whose programme of events include afternoon tea and crafts; and floristry sessions.
- Creative Remedies – a community arts scheme which aims to improve the health and wellbeing of Warrington residents over the age of 18 – whose events include performing arts sessions.
The festival ends on Sunday 25 March with a Memory Walk around Victoria Park, to raise awareness of dementia and raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society. The walk will be followed by a craft session – giving participants the chance to make a piece of art based on the ‘Forget-Me-Not’.
