TWO major road improvement schemes in Warrington are  set to go ahead after the Borough Council scooped £7.36m of government funding.

The council has been awarded the funding for two schemes at Omega and Birchwood that will cost up to £10.31 million.

Warrington’s funding success has been announced by Transport Secretary Chris Grayling as one of 76 traffic ‘pinchpoint’ projects from across the country have been awarded funding totalling £244 million.

The Omega Highway Gateways project will widen junctions at Burtonwood Road/Kingswood Road Lingley Green Avenue/A57 Liverpool Road (Trigger Pond) to increase capacity and reduce traffic congestion and improve road safety.

Warrington East Phase 3 will see an upgrade of the eastern gateway into Warrington and the Birchwood Enterprise Zone. The project consists of new traffic signals on Junction 11 of the M62 and the partial widening of the A574 Birchwood Way to reduce peak hour traffic congestion and improve road safety.

Work is already under way on developing each of the schemes. Consultation is already in progress on the Omega Highway Gateways Junction 1 (Burtonwood Road/Kingswood Road) and the potential for a Warrington East Phase 3 was part of the Warrington East Phase 2 consultation which took place over the summer.

Clr Hans Mundry, executive board member for transport, said: “I’m delighted with this latest funding success. We are constantly striving to improve the transport networks around Warrington and the schemes at Omega and Warrington East should improve journey times for commuters and residents alike.”

Terry O’Neill, leader of the council, said: “Investing in the infrastructure of the borough is vital to ensuring that we continue to grow and thrive and these projects will help to achieve that aim.”
