Join this scheme to help blood cancer victims – MP

PEOPLE in Warrington are being urged to join up to an innovative scheme to save and improve the lives of blood cancer victims.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones is asking people in her constituency to join blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan’s “Communities v Blood Cancer” scheme.
The charity provides patients with matching donors from their stem cell donor register and supports them and their families throughout the transplant process. They also conduct world-class research into stem cell matching and transplants.
There are already 1,281 potential lifesavers from Warrington North on the stem cell register – but Ms Jones would like to see more.
She said: “These incredible people give blood cancer patients a second chance of life.
“That number ranks Warrington North at 119 out of 650 constituencies – a fantastic achievement – but we can do better. A top 10 per cent ranking is within our grasp.
“I would encourage more people to think about registering so that we can rise up the ranking, but much more importantly so that more people can get that second chance of life.
“Young male donors are much more likely to be selected by transplant centres and so we need to recruit more men – only 40 per cent at present – and more men under the age of 40.
“I would ask people to give real consideration to joining the growing band of ‘potential lifesavers’ here in Warrington.”
Male donors generally have a greater number of stem cells and young donors provide better outcomes for patients and are less likely to have health problems that might prevent donation.
Anthony Nolan is encouraging 16-30 year olds to sign up to the stem cell donor register.
