Warning after sinkhole appears in Warrington town centre street

POLICE are warning motorists to avoid a Warrington town centre street following the appearance of a sinkhole.

The sinkhole, which is believed to be at least seven feet deep, appeared on Cairo Street, Warrington earlier today (Sunday).

Police are warning motorists to avoid the area around Cairo Street.

The sinkhole has appeared at the bottom of Cairo Street near the old Cairo Street Methodist Church.

The whole of Cairo Street has been closed pending further investigations.

Local businesswoman Michele Butterworth who runs nearby Shelly’s Restaurant says there have been in a number of sinkholes in the area over the years, caused by old Victorian sewers.

  1. At least it’s on a road that has very little traffic down it as it could have caused a nasty accident if it was on a busier and more used car route. The town centre roads and surrounding village roads must be full of these old Victorian sewers and I wonder how often they are checked, if that’s possible, for signs of deterioration. I wonder if there is a utilities map which shows exactly where they all are and the size and age of them all….I’d like to know please if anyone knows how to find out or obtain a copy.
