Time Square car park – through the eye of Oculus photography

THE new Time Square car park, currently being built on the old market car park site is creating quite a conversation piece with the people of Warrington.

Some people love it and some really don’t like it, but one thing is for sure, you can’t miss it!

The 1169 space car park was designed by Manchester based architects, Leach Rhodes Walker. The £18.5 million demolition and construction contract was awarded to I & H Brown and should take a total of 15 months to complete. The car park is scheduled to open in November 2017.

So what do you think of the structure? Is it phwoar, or is it an eye sore?

Oculus Studios photographer, Tony Longmore loves it. He said: “I’ve been to several presentations regarding the Bridge Street regeneration and a lot of thought has gone into the project. There is a lot going on behind the scenes.

“I like the design, it represents Warrington’s industrial past with the spanner shapes on the side. The wire curtain is indicative of the Rylands Brothers Wire manufacturers and of course, the affectionate name for Warrington Wolves rugby league.”

“Whatever people think of the new car park, it’s here to stay. I realise it isn’t everybody’s cup of tea but I think we should all embrace the changes that are being made in the town, they’re way overdue.

“The new Time Square complex with the 13 screen cinema, bars, restaurants and the new market are just what Warrington needs and I can’t wait for the completion in 2019. With the many different opinions, maybe we should call it the Marmite Carpark?”

  1. Interesting and until reading that it had never occurred to me that the outer design actually represented anything ie our industrial past.
So do I like or loathe it ? I quite like it now although but I have to say I still think its height and size is very overbearing when you come from the Brian Bevan island direction.
One things for sure visitors to the town centre wont struggle to find the car park….you cant miss it !

    • Diz, do you seriously believe that the design of this car park was influenced by anything other than it’s ‘quick, easy, knock up’ potential?
The photographer’s ‘industrial past’ interpretation is obviously an attempt to justify the grossly ugly design. It’s just his personal viewpoint.
If I told you it represents Warrington past and present, The pox marks for the past plagues and the prison mesh for the present day yob culture plague would that make you like it more or less?

Whatever fanciful interpretations are given there’s no escaping the truth – it is a hideously ugly monstrosity!
I think the name ‘Pox Park’ suits it well.
