A YOUNG Warrington woman is among the 12 finalists in the annual Stephen Sondheim Society’s Student Performer of the Year gala to take place at the Noel Coward Theatre, London on Sunday.
Former Priestley College performing arts student Georgia Frost already has an impressive list of theatre credits, including The Taming of the Shrew at Shakespeare’s Globe, Two Gentlemen of Verona and Treasure Island, at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and the Ruff Guide to Shakespeare at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
She has also appeared in BBC television’s The Magic of Musicals.
After leaving Priestley, Georgia trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
But she was already attracting attention at Priestley – playing the title role in the college’s acclaimed production of Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2011.
The annual competition, co-produced by The Stephen Sondheim Society and Mercury Musical Developments, sees 12 of the top student performers from musical theatre and drama schools across the UK each perform a classic song by Stephen Sondheim and a new musical theatre song, written by members of Mercury Musical Developments.
The first prize is £1,000.
Stephen Sondheim Society chairman Craig Glenday said: “This annual event has become a highlight in the musical theatre calendar, showcasing the very best students from the UK’s top drama and musical-theatre schools. “These talented young men and women are the stars of the future, and we’re excited to give them this opportunity to perform on a West End stage – most of them for the first time.
“Sondheim himself talks about teaching as a sacred profession, and The Stephen Sondheim Society is committed to supporting and encouraging students in all aspects of musical theatre. Good luck to all twelve!”
