New bridge and link road set to win approval

PLANNING chiefs at Warrington are expected to approve an environmental assessment application in respect of the proposed new link road and bridge between Chester Road and Slutchers Lane  at a meeting on Wednesday.
The application covers issues such as demolition,  earthworks, drainage, lighting, signage and temporary construction compounds – and the applicant is the council itself.
It also includes an application to demolish a building on Chester Road and a retrospective application for hoarding surrounding the site.
The site is mostly rough, brownfield land, containing a former car garage and the remains of a golf driving range.
A report to be considered by the development management committee indicates that a total of 19 different consultation events were held at various locations between 2015 and January this year. The scheme was amended following the consultation
Aim of the proposal is to reduce traffic through Bridge Foot and help make journey times shorter and more reliable for motorists and public transport users.  The new bridge will facilitate the long-term aim of accessing areas adjoin Centre Park for potential future development.
Consultation letters have been sent to more than 120 nearby residents.
Planning officers are recommending approval of the scheme which, they say, will be in keeping with the character of the area.

  1. Although the aim of the new bridge is purportedly to reduce traffic through Bridge Foot and help make journey times shorter and more reliable for motorists and public transport users. It would seem the long-term aim of accessing areas adjoin Centre Park for potential future development, might well frustrate that objective, by introducing 500+ homes, and hence an additional 1000/1300 vehicles, into the current and already congested traffic stream.

    • Absolute scandal. Forget pussy footing around with roads that do nothing to ease congestion. What is the point of this road that does not even bypass the problem it is trying alleviate, Bank Quay. Waste of money, and as above a smoke screen to develop Centre Park further. Warring had the chance thirty years ago to solve with East-West bypass that is now Birchwood Way. Stopped short instead of carrying through to Westbrook. Typical lack of forward vision again from the so called councillors of Warrington.

  2. Were going to need a bigger road than this it a waste of time and money. Duel carriageway from Crosfields Island to Walton do it now. Stop traffic getting onto Bridge foot from the Barbold st and put access the to Riverside retail park from Howly side.

  3. A dual carriage way to Crossfields ‘Pink Island’ roundabout would have been the ideal solution as you say Edwin and many have said the same over the years. I very much doubt that would even be possible now though since Lidl and KFC have been built on the old waste ground near it.
I agree 100% that another access/exit to Riverside Retail parks needs to be made. A few weeks ago traffic onto and off the retail park was gridlocked and it took us over an hour to get off there. It wasn’t even close of business time it was 2.30pm. Utter madness !!!

  4. I forgot to say…of course it will all be approved at the meeting as the council have already bought the Drive Time Golf land (I’m sure that’s already been demolished) and they have also bought the land where the car sales place was. I wonder how much they paid for both???
It would be rather funny if the planning/dev control board did refuse it though after all that…oops naughty me for thinking that way ha ha.
One thing is for sure…..Chester Road will be gridlocked once the new bridge is put over to there with the new 4 way lights close to Gainsborough Road. It was bad enough recently when they had temporary lights there.
    Ahh well…….
