Samaritans search for volunteers

A LOCAL organisation that gives support to more than 2,000 people every year has issued its own call for help.

The Mid Cheshire Branch of the Samaritans is looking to take on more volunteers that are willing to help those in need of emotional support.

Branch director Carrie Musa said: “It is such a rewarding role for anyone who volunteers knowing that you could make a potentially life-saving difference to another person.

You don’t just have to be answering the phones to make a difference. We have so many different roles, which means anyone can find a place within the organisation.”

The Mid Cheshire office is based on Manchester Road near Tesco and every month answers around 200 emails and text messages from people in need.

It has been helping people since 1965 and in one month the 59 listening and support volunteers can spend 250 hours on the phone offering encouragement.

Callers can be in distress or even suicidal. Their worries are often brought on by money troubles, bereavement, divorce or the death of a pet.

All volunteers receive full support and training to ensure they have the confidence to help others.

As well as phone support there are roles for people wanting to fundraise and publicise the Samaritans.

Volunteers can also help with recruitment, training, IT support or by becoming trustee members. The current recruits are aged between 19 and 80+.

Carrie said: “There’s no substitute for that human contact we can offer and that everyone needs at times”

Potential volunteers will be invited to a Samaritans’ information evening to hear from volunteers and meet other new recruits.
