A challenge to men over mental health

MEN in Warrington are being challenged to connect over mental health and to help identify the best ways to reach out to those who may need support or advice.
A group of local organisations, led by Warrington Borough Council, is asking local males to air their views on a range of wellbeing issues facing men, with a particular focus on mental health.
Research shows that 12.5 per cent of men experience a common mental health problem – and are less likely to use psychological therapies than women.
Significantly more men than women become alcohol dependent and men are more likely to use – and die from – illegal drugs.
Three out of four people to commit suicide are men – and suicide is the biggest cause of death among men under 45.
Cllr Maureen McLaughlin, the council’s lead member for public health and wellbeing, said: “The stress and strain of daily life can affect anyone. “For some it can lead to serious mental health problems, or to people feeling overwhelmed and suicidal. It’s vital that we make sure men know how and where to get help if they feel unable to cope.”
Men living in the borough are being asked to complete a short, on-line survey by visiting www.happyoksad.org.uk, and clicking on the ‘Adults’ section.
Everyone who completes the survey has a chance of winning a £30 shopping voucher or a ticket for a Wolves match.
The survey will run until the end of January 2017.
Organisations involved in the project are Bridgewater Community Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Healthwatch Warrington, Livewire, Next Stage, Warrington Borough Council, Warrington CCG and Warrington Wolves Foundation.
