THE plan for a new bridge spanning the Manchester Ship Canal in West Warrington has received a major boost
The Government has announced further funding for the bridge as part of the Autumn Statement.
Chancellor Philip Hammond announced that the scheme will be one of six project  which will be given funding to prepare a business case for investment as part of the £475 million Local Majors Fund.
Warrington South MP David Mowat, who has campaigned for a new high level
bridge across the Manchester Ship Canal, welcomed the announcement.
He said: “This is fantastic news for Warrington and is part of this Government’s vision to boost productivity in the North – focussing on skills, connectivity, innovation and trade.
“A new bridge is desperately needed and will make a major difference to the traffic problems in Warrington.”

  1. It probably would make a difference to the traffic issues…… if they weren’t planning on building hundreds of new houses along the route of the new relief road which will no doubt mean more traffic lights, more roundabouts, more cars and more congestion…. well thought out plan???

  2. The alleged “boost in productivity” will be frustrated by the needless lengthening of time local people daily take to get to work on our increasingly overcrowded and regularly gridlocked roads, and it has to be added railways. Please don’t say HS2 will overcome the latter problem, HS3 is vitally more important, but this well thought out plan is wrongly prioritised.

  3. Interesting that all the hype about Warrington getting a new relief route has now come down to ‘putting a business case together’. For the last year or so it has been intimated that it was a done deal that we would be having one. Media articles quoted a visit by Greg Clark former Cities Minister Greg Clark to Warrington to announce funding for road improvement works, including a new bridge across the Mersey to take pressure off Bridge Foot.etc. Come on, let’s have some action and less talk. No wonder the general public have lost faith in our politicians and governments.
