Celebrating the success of apprenticeships

WARRINGTON is taking the lead on securing apprenticeships for young people across the borough.
Currently 32 apprentices are working within the borough council across various services, with 11 of them completing their full frameworks and seven already securing either a permanent or an extended contract since April.
Some of the types of apprenticeship that have been achieved have been in grounds maintenance, fine turf maintenance and business administration.
In the past five years more than 12,500 people in Warrington have experienced the benefits of an apprenticeship.
Cllr Terry O’Neill, leader of the council, said: “I am passionate about Warrington and giving young people a chance so I would encourage anyone to take advantage of an apprenticeship programme.
“I started as an apprentice in Warrington many years ago and it gave me a good foundation for my career so I would recommend an apprenticeship to anyone as it’s a great opportunity to get your foot on the career ladder.
“We have recruited a number of apprentices over the past couple of years, many of whom have stayed with us, whilst others have moved onto employment or further education elsewhere, and I am determined to carry this programme on in the future. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate everyone who has completed their apprenticeship and wish you all the very best for the future.”
Sharon Canning completed her business administration apprenticeship at the council earlier this year.
She said: “The apprenticeship really opened doors for me. It was nice to be given this opportunity despite being a bit older than some of the other apprentices.
“I was a trained hairdresser and after having children decided I wanted to change my career. I enjoyed every minute of my time working in the council’s public health team as they treated me like any other employee and I learned so much.
“Since completing my apprenticeship, I have now secured a permanent position at the council and I am looking forward to continuing with my career.”
The council is preparing for the introduction of the Apprenticeship Levy and the launch of the new apprenticeship standards in April next year which will be used to continue to develop the workforce.
