Area board on the lookout for new members

PEOPLE interested in making decisions about what happens in their local area could do so by joining their area board – and Warrington’s East Area Board is on the lookout for new members.
The board, which supports local groups through grants for community projects is looking for new members among residents.
It has supported many worthwhile projects in the past year, including providing funding towards the refurbishment of the kitchen at Padgate Tennis and Bowls Club, and the junior playground at Newchurch Primary School.
The board also promotes health and wellbeing initiatives in the area and recent projects supported include “dementia friend” information sessions,   Ageing Well and Feeling Great courses for the over 50s where people can get advice about health, exercise and even how to use smartphones and tablets.
Birchwood resident Stuart Davis has been a board member for two years.
He said: “I have met with representatives from key stakeholders such as the police and the council, as well as residents from Culcheth, Croft, Padgate, Woolston, Rixton and Glazebrook. There have been many interesting discussions, with plenty of enthusiasm, and we have been able to offer some financial support for community projects in all these areas.
“I think the board is an excellent communication conduit for all those involved and for the various groups within our communities. I would encourage residents to become members, attend regularly and help build and support successful communities through partnership and communication.”
Cllr Tony Higgins, Warrington Borough Council’s lead member for culture, leisure and community, said: “Please consider joining the board. We really need more residents to be involved so we can hear what you think is needed in your community, and help guide us on where we need to concentrate our joint efforts.
“Your participation is hugely important, as you and your neighbours will be the people who will reap the benefits of any initiatives we are able to support.”
The board is managed by the council’s neighbourhoods team and membership includes representatives from the council, police, health, business borough and parish councillors and local residents.
It meets six times a year on a Wednesday at 6pm. To find out more, contact Ruth Whitworth on 07827 232563 or email [email protected]
Deadline for applications is Friday 9 September.
