THE Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition in Warrington are supporting tomorrow’s “Rock for Corbyn” event in the town.
Former borough councillor Kevin Bennett – who quit Labour to join TUSC – is urging people to turn out for the event at The Brewhouse, Buttermarket Street as a show of defiance against the attack on Corbyn supporters by what he describes as “Blairite MPs and councillors,”
Mr Bennett (pictured) said: “Warrington TUSC supporters want to join the Labour Party to support Jeremy Corbyn and fight for socialism and are expecting that if Jeremy is re-elected then we will be able to do so.”
He said TUSC was founded to fight for anti-austerity socialist principles that New Labour had abandoned.
“We have always sought to work with socialists in the Labour Party andsupported Jeremy Corbyn and his supporters, while fighting against the Blairite policies of the majority of the Warrington Labour council group. That is why I joined TUSC, as a socialist and anti-cuts councillor whose labour movement principles contradicted the undemocratic bullying autocracy of Warrington Labour’s council leadership.”
Last summer, Mr Bennett was the only borough councillor in Warrington to publicly endorse Jeremy Corbyn.
He added: “We hope that Jeremy Corbyn will be re-elected leader of Labour, as a step towards committing Labour to anti-austerity socialist policies and a democratic federal structure, starting by rooting out the ‘Red Tory’ Blairites.
“Therefore Warrington TUSC is hoping and expecting this autumn to be able to join Labour and take forward the fight to end austerity in Warrington.”
