Historic goal posts to go on traffic island

1

PLANNING bosses have given the go-ahead for the historic, original goal posts from Warrington’s Wilderspool  Stadium to be displayed on a traffic island.
Warrington Wolves Charitable Foundation successfully applied for permission to erect the posts  on the Brian Bevan island at the intersection of Chester Road, Wilderspool Causeway and Park Boulevard.
Some concerns were expressed about the future maintenance of the goal posts but members of the borough’s development management committee were told this would be the responsibility of the applicants.
The statue of  Rugby League legend Bevan at the Halliwell Jones Stadium was originally sited  on the island but was later  moved, although many people have continued to refer to it as the “Brian Bevan Island.”
Erecting the goalposts on the island will retain the Rugby League connection with the site at one of the gateways to the town centre.

  1. James Dudley Johnson on

Brian Bevan lived just across the road at Winwick and he was a good fiend to my Dad. I think his house was on Winwick Road in those Days. I was a schoolboy when Brian played at Wilderspool Stadium and i was in the Royal Navy when he went vent back to Australia. My. Dad died since and I am now 84. Would be glad of a comment from those years ago.
