Council to award contract for £2.7m market fit out

COUNCIL chiefs will be asked next week to award a contract for the £2.7 million fit out of the temporary market building which will serve Warrington for at least two years while a new market is constructed as part of the Time Square Regeneration Scheme.
Delivery of the temporary market is seen as critical to the progression of the overall scheme because the existing market has to be demolished to make way for the new cinema, restaurants, council offices and new market which will be at its heart.
A number of firms have submitted bids and officers say the preferred bidder’s tender is within the original allocated budget of £2,751,892.65.
The bids will be considered in private at the end of a meeting of the council’s executive board on Monday.  The successful tenderer will be encourage to use local subcontractors where at all possible and to ensure the wider supply chain to the provision of the service is sourced locally.
In fact, all the tenderers have stated they will aim to bolster the local employment economy by supporting employment of local contractors  and providing job opportunities – particularly for young people.
There has been widespread consultation on the project with local businesses, market traders, councillors, MPs and other interested parties. A public exhibition was attended by 256 people.
The Time Square Regeneration Scheme was originally known as the Bridge Street Regeneration Scheme. After the new permanent market is built – behind the old Boots store in Bridge Street – the temporary market building will be converted for other uses with Time Square.
