WORK has started on four brand new outdoor tennis courts in Great Sankey to ensure they are open in time for residents to pick up a racket during Wimbledon next month.

The Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) awarded LiveWire £160,000 earlier this year to redevelop tennis facilities at Great Sankey Leisure Centre.

Works include new drainage, porous surfacing, fencing and floodlighting to allow a full programme of tennis to be run all year round.

The new courts are part of the £16 million project to transform the existing leisure centre into an integrated facility which provides a one-stop-shop for leisure, health, wellbeing and culture.

Emma Hutchinson, managing director of LiveWire, said: “We are thrilled to have received funding from the LTA to provide four brand new tennis courts as part of the Great Sankey Neighbourhood Hub development.

“We hope the new courts will further develop the growing tennis community in Warrington, who are already benefitting from the facilities in Birchwood.”

Residents in the area will also benefit from a new fitness suite, upgraded swimming pools, a 3G pitch, GP surgeries, a smart library, cafe and health and wellbeing facilities including a spa as part of the dementia friendly development, which is set to open in autumn 2017.

LiveWire is hoping to have the courts open by the end of June to be able to host a local tennis tournament to celebrate Wimbledon, which will see the world’s biggest players descend on the All England Club to battle to take home the most iconic accolade in the sport.
