RESIDENTS are being invited to vote for their favourite artwork from the comfort of their device in Warrington’s first ever digital art heritage competition.

36 entries from local amateur artists have been received by the mayor’s art competition and within hours of voting starting, on the closing date of 3 May, more than 130 votes were cast.

Mayor, Cllr Geoff Settle, said: “I am very pleased with the immediate interest and very happy that the project to raise awareness of Warrington’s heritage has taken off and raised money for this year’s mayor’s charities.”

The mayor launched the competition after reading a desktop survey in a national newspaper that claimed there was no heritage in Warrington of any note.

He said: “I wanted to find a way to fight back and show that this claim was untrue.

“I created a competition where people could paint or photograph a Warrington heritage image, taking inspiration from our buildings and structures across the town.

“Then, being the first digital Mayor, I wanted to receive as many of the entries as possible digitally so that I could display them on the Mayor of Warrington’s Facebook site and people could view and vote from across the world.”

All the entries have been placed in a Facebook album and can be easily accessed via his Facebook site or by clicking Mayor’s Art Heritage Competition.

Hover over the group of images and click to be taken into the album where the artworks can be viewed. Voting is done by simply clicking on the LIKE button.

Voting can also take place however at the Best of Northern Art Gallery, on Bridge Street, where the original artworks are on view. The gallery is run by MacIntyre, one of the Mayor’s four charities.

Contestants have already raised more than £100 through their entry fees and, if anyone else would like to donate to the Mayor’s four charities, they can do so digitally via the Mayor’s page on the WBC web site http://www.warrington.gov.uk or by taking this shortcut:  Mayor of Warrington.
