Fatality on railway line at Birchwood

BRITISH Transport Police are investigating an incident on the railway line near Birchwood Station at Warrington earlier today after reports of a man being struck and killed by a train.

Due to emergency services dealing with the incident  Birchwood Station was closed and there were delays on the main Manchester to Liverpool line while emergency services responded to the incident.

A spokesperson for British Transport Police said: “British Transport officers and the police attended the line close to Birchwood Station after reports that a man had been struck by a train just before 12 noon today.

“Paramedics from the local ambulance also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A file will be prepared for the coroner.”

UPDATED: 14.10 The Birchwood lines have now re-opened.
