Village meeting to oppose HS2 rail line

VILLAGERS have organised a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday) to voice opposition to the plans for the HS2 rail line which, if built, will slice through a number of Warrington communities.
The meeting at Warburton Parish Rooms at 7.30pm, will be attended by Frank Allen, chairman of CADRAG – the Culcheth and Glazebury Rail Action Group – and among other speakers will be Marion McNaughton, of Warburton, and Cllr Sean Anstee, leader of Trafford Council.
Mr Allen, who is standing as a Conservative candidate for the Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft ward in the borough council elections on May 5, said: “This is a very important meeting and I hope many local residents will attend to give their support.
“The meeting will update Warburton residents on recent developments in relation to the HS2 Golborne Link and HS3.”
Warburton is just one village the high speed rail link will cut through if it goes ahead.
Others include Rixton-with-Glazebrook and Culcheth and the fringes of Lymm.
The decision on the Golborne Link has been linked to HS3 by the Secretary of State for Transport and by the chairman of Merseytravel, Liam Robinson, who February 22 called for the Golborne Link to be used as part of the HS3 line between Liverpool and Manchester.
Mr Allen said: “Warrington Borough Council has a key role in representing the people of Warrington in the debate on HS3, which will be decided by Transport for the North, a local government organisation.
“I am standing for election to represent Culcheth, Glazebury and Croft on the borough council, and if elected will provide a clear voice for local residents on this important issue.”
