A FORMER professional golfer, arrested in Warrington in possession of knives, a mask and latex gloves, has been jailed for nine years after pleading guilty to two robberies.
Police arrested him in Warrington, where he had been staying at The King’s Head pub and found the knives, gloves and mask in his car.
At the pub they found a bag containing between £4,000 and £5,000 cash in his room.
Andrew Dodman, 51, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty at Mold Crown Court to two offences of robbery – one at a betting shop in Wrexham and another at a house in the town.
The court was told he committed the offences to obtain money to feed an addiction to gambling.
He claimed that at the time he was suffering from post traumatic stress having himself been the victim of a vicious robbery by three men armed with knives, one of who threatened to cut his ear off
The court was told Dodman was a man of contradictions. On the one hand, he was intelligent and cultured and had been a professional golfer for eight years. In 1987 he was the Welsh PGA champion.
But a major quirk in his character was an obsession for gambling which motivated offending. He had previous convictions for fraud, theft and deception but none for violence.
