The blaze involved an empty building next to the already fire damaged  Haydock Street Business Centre, with engines from Warrington, Stockton Heath, Widnes, Runcorn and Leigh sent to the scene.

The aerial platform also travelled from Chester.

The single storey building, measuring about 80 metres by 50 metres, was well alight when firefighters arrived shortly before 5.30am.
The blaze was divided into sectors, with firefighters working to bring the fire under control in each sector.

The surrounding area was heavily smokelogged and people were asked to avoid the area. Police were at the scene.

Shortly after 8.30am the number of fire engines at the scene was reduced to three, plus the aerial monitor. Firefighting continued, but access was made into the building.

A building inspector was at the scene and arrangements have been made for a demolition company demolish the building when the fire is finally out to ensure public safety.

The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained but it is believed it could have been started by homeless people living in an out building attached to the side of the main building.

Haydock Street is still currently closed to traffic.
