MENTAL health issues affecting young men, particularly in the military, will be explored in a public lecture at Warrington.
Colonel Alan Finnegan, professor in the University of Chester’s Faculty of Health and Social Care will give his free talk on Tuesday, February 23 in the Lance Dobson Hall at the Warrington Campus at 6.30pm.
The issue of mental health and veterans has recently been in the news with the Royal British Legion calling on the government to do more to help veterans suffering from Gulf War syndrome.
Professor Finnegan’s talk will focus on both military and young men’s mental health more generally and give an opportunity to learn more about his work within this key area of health and social care.
He was commissioned into the British Army in 1987 and his clinical background is in Mental Health. He has been deployed to Iraq, the Balkans, Northern Ireland, South Africa and Afghanistan and has also served as a Nurse Consultant in Military Mental Health and as the Ministry of Defence Specialist Nursing Advisor in Mental Health.
Until December, Professor Finnegan served as the UK Ministry of Defence Professor of Nursing before moving to a new appointment as a Professor at the University of Chester.
Professor Annette McIntosh-Scott, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Provost of the Warrington Campus and Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Care, said: “We’re very much looking forward to welcoming Professor Finnegan to the Warrington Campus and learning more about this key area of health and social care.
“The series of public lectures is a wonderful example of the University’s values, as we seek to demonstrate the importance and strength of local partnership in our areas of teaching and research at the Warrington Campus – Policing, Heath and Social Care, Education, Business and Sport.”
