1,000 tyres fly tipped in Warrington wasting time and money

Fly tippers are wasting council time and taxpayers’ money – that’s the message from Warrington Borough Council after environmental officers were forced to spend several days last week removing illegally dumped tyres from various parts of the borough.

The council’s environmental team says too much money, time and energy is spent removing illegally dumped waste, and is directly affecting other parts of the service.

Last year, nearly 1,000 tyres were dumped across borough – nearly 100 trucks full. The cost to remove them amounted to approximately £15,000 – money that could have been spent on more positive environmental works.

Fly-tipping is the illegal dumping of rubbish on public or private land and should be reported as soon as possible to prevent further fly-tipping.

Cllr Judith Guthrie, executive board member for environment and public protection, said:
“Fly tipping can be a real blight on local communities and as a council, we take firm action against those who fly tip such as; roadside checks, compliance visits to local businesses and by prosecuting those who disobey the law.

“Fly tipping not only attracts vermin and damages the environment, but it costs council tax payers for it be removed.

“It’s concerning that so much money and energy goes into removing illegally dumped waste especially when it could go towards improving our environment and the quality of life for so many residents.

“Fly tipping is illegal, can carry hefty fines and will not be tolerated.”

  1. Disgusting !! That amount of tyres must be coming from a business/trader who doesn’t like to put their hands in their pockets to pay the charges for legal tyre collection and disposal.
Maybe the council should invest in a few of those wildlife cameras that can be hidden out of sight at various spots where tipping happens or is likely to happen like other councils have used successfully to record the dumpers in action and then prosecute/fine them. They record in the day and night and can easily be put up out of sight and easily moved around to other spots as and when. They aren’t expensive and even if they only catch one person and slap them with a huge fine them that would be money coming in to offset the costs of clear ups etc and might be a deterrent if people think they might be being watched.

Of course another suggestion would be for the council to make use of the collected tyres….they could build tyre walls round bank park and other areas with them seeing as though the chap managed to get away with it on Kingsway 😉
