Birchwood Pinch Point traffic delays warning

HIGHWAY engineers at Warrington Council are warning of possible traffic delays as congestion-busting improvements along Birchwood’s A574 corridor near completion in the New Year.

Major roadworks taking place at the Moss Gate junction are due to move into the closing stages, requiring a change in the way the traffic is managed.

Extensive carriageway resurfacing means overnight closures (8pm-6am) have been scheduled between 4 and 15 January. And from 16 January temporary, four-way traffic signals will be introduced at the junction for approximately five weeks and the A574 Birchwood Way reduced to a single lane on the approach to Moss Gate roundabout to allow a safe working environment for the workforce.Hans_Mundry

Councillor Hans Mundry, (pictured) executive board member for highways, transportation and public realm said: “We’re working very hard to meet our target of completing the works by April 2016, and these road closures and temporary lights are a crucial part of delivering the final scheme.

“The end result will be a much improved junction at a location where severe congestion has for a long-time affected residents, visitors and local businesses alike. The end is almost in sight.

“In the meantime, we’d like to apologise for any inconvenience and assure road users that contractors are working as quickly as possible.”

Warrington Borough Council and the Local Enterprise Partnership secured government funding to deliver a series of transport improvements along the A574 Birchwood Way corridor. As well as the Moss Gate work, the Birchwood Pinchpoint Project involved improvements at Oakwood Gate (the so-called ‘dog bone’) and a new buses-only link between Ordnance Avenue and Faraday Street.
