Drink driving – a seasonal warning from MP

NEW research has revealed that 1.05 drivers for every 1,000 in Warrington have a drink or drug driving conviction – and the figure has prompted MP David Mowat to urge motorists to avoid drink or drug driving over the festive season.
The data comes from MoneySuperMarket who have analysed 11 million car insurance quotes run over the last 12 months.
It found the railway town of Crewe has the highest proportion of motorists with offences for drink
and drug driving (1.74 per 1000 population), while Central London drivers have the lowest proportion (0.12).
Kevin Pratt, car insurance expert at MoneySuperMarket, said: “There are serious consequences for those caught for drink or drug driving, including up to six months’ jail time, a driving ban of at least a year and a fine of up to £5,000.
“Even after a punishment has been served, a conviction will sit on your licence for 11 years and you’ll have to declare the offence when you apply for car insurance for five years.”
Mr Mowat said: “I want everyone in Warrington to be able to enjoy themselves over the Christmas break.
“There’s no harm in having a few drinks, but you need to plan ahead how you’re going to get safely home afterwards.
“Drivers who choose to get behind the wheel whilst under the influence are not only endangering their lives and careers, they are putting the lives of all other road users at risk too.”
