UPDATED: Firefighters battle Birchwood blaze

EIGHT fire engines tackled a fire at AMEC Foster Wheeler’s premises at Birchwood, Warrington  – with local residents being advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precaution.

Shortly after 4pm, firefighters reported the blaze had been extinguished but that the building had been heavily smokelogged. Ventilation units were being used to clear smoke from the building on Faraday Street.

The area remained cordoned off however.

Fire crews from Warrington, Birchwood and Stockton Heath were involved in the operation which started at around 2.30pm.

There were no reports of injuries.

  1. Amec Foster Wheeler statement: “A small fire broke out on Thursday, November 19 when solvent came into contact with a heat source at our Materials and Chemistry Laboratory in Birchwood.
    “Three members of staff in the laboratory were safely evacuated and nobody was hurt.
    “Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service quickly brought the fire under control.
    “People nearby were advised to keep windows closed as a precaution but this advice was lifted shortly afterwards.
    “No radioactive material was involved.
    “Our remaining 40 labs remain fully operational. It is business as usual and our customers can be assured that continuity of service will not be disrupted.”
