Resident opposes £16m leisure plan

A NEARBY resident has expressed concerns about the likely impact of the bold plan for a £16 million “neighbourhood hub” on the site of Great Sankey Leisure Centre.
Warrington planners are due to consider the proposals next week and officers are recommending it be approved.
But a resident of nearby Stockdale Drive says there has been a lack of consideration to what he considers a significant impact on the quality of life of nearby householders.
He says the use of Stockdale Drive and Barrowhall Lane for dropping off and picking up pupils of Great Sankey High School has been a souce of “immense irritation and annoyance” for him and his neighbours.
It results in damage to lawns, impairs access to and from the estate and is a safety risk because of a blind bend.
”The proposed development will not ease the congestion experienced in the area in the mornings and afternoons – it will be worsened.
“The turnaround point in front of my home will become even more frequently used, increasing the risk of injury and local damage”
The resident admit the development will be a “huge boost” to the area but calls for action to prevent the area – and in particular his property – from being used as a drop off point.
The scheme proposes part demolition of the existing leisure centre and redevelopment of the site with new, two-storey facilities to provide sports, leisure and health services, four new tennis courts, a new access road with a junction at Lingley Green Avenue, new car parking and associated lighting and loandscaping.
The borough council’s development management committee will be asked to approve the scheme next Wednesday.
